The following are some suggestions on some pretty big improvements that could be made to improve the sign in process of dust and make it more user friendly.
Being a web developer, one key thing you learn is that the less clicks the better. I think the same should apply to Dust. I know personally that I get tired of the process to Sign into dust which is currently:
- Click on game to start it
- Wait for all company logos
- Message comes up about connecting to server, click X
- Wait for all resources to load
- Introduce video starts, hit start
- Title screen comes up, hit start
- Character select comes up, select character, click X
- Click x again to enter in character
- Wait for item vault to load, select ok, click x
- Wait for game to load
Totals Clicks Right Now = 6
Ok, lets look at a couple places we could improve this process and reduce the dreaded wait time, senseless clicking and so on.
Improvement #1 (Bullet 3): Connecting to Server I imagine this may only be a beta thing but the connect to server, does it really need to be there? I know you have used it to display server is down but could you make it at least try to automatically connect at least once, if it fails, then show the message? There is really no reason to show the box unless there is a message to show. ( Clicks -1)
Improvement #2 (Bullet 5): The Starter Video The introductory video is nice, the first time... Could we make it only automatically played when no characters exist? Add an option somewhere like the title screen to enable to play the video again if they ever desire to watch it. ( Clicks -1)
Improvement #3 (Bullet 7 & 8): Selecting a Character You are basically having to select a character twice. I would say this is one of the more annoying double clicks. I for one always worry about miss clicking terminate, I know there is most likely another are you sure screen but the placement of delete in this menu is just bad.
Delete should only be on the menu if its a common feature that a player is going to use, which in this case it is most certainly not. Change the terminate to a whole different button, Triangle is popular for delete. Remove the menu and just make a single click enter the character. ( Clicks -1)
Improvement #4 (Bullet 9): The Vault The item vault only comes up if you have unassigned items. Could I get rid of this by just assigning all the items to a character? sure but that is super inconvenient. For one, I do not know if and when item trading will be allowed. I have well over 50 items in my vault and well not all of it is stuff I would use.
My suggestion is to move the vault to in-game and remove this click all together. If for functionality reasons, it has to be before you enter the character, make it a button push, may I suggest Square. Like moving the delete function to a button, this would reduce unnecessary waiting and clicks. (Clicks -1)
All these suggestions are ways to make the sign in process a much friendly process for gamers. A lot of the click and waiting adds up and whether you implement some or all of these suggestions, I think we can agree in this case that 3 Clicks > 6 Clicks.
